The production of glass products, or glassmaking, in the territory of Ukraine had deep historical roots. The exact time of its origin is not known, but in Scythian burials, necklaces made of glass were found, which had multi-colored inclusions.
In the western Ukrainian lands, the huts, the places where such products were created, began their activity as early as the 16th century. In the middle of the 17th century, there were about 20 huts in the territory of Kyiv Oblast, Poltava Oblast, Chernihiv Oblast, and three huts in Transcarpathia. A century later, more than 120 glassmaking workshops worked in Chernihiv Oblast. At first, these were small factories with a small number of workers.

A characteristic feature of glassmaking at that time was a home workshop where glass production was carried out by hand. Craftsmen used techniques handed down from generation to generation and produced a variety of glassware, from tableware to works of art.
Between the 18th and 19th centuries, glass manufactories and factories began to appear alongside the huts. Gradually, glassmaking, based on manual labor, begins to decline: small centers of glassmaking cease to operate.

In the first half of the 20th century, glassware and other products were already manufactured in Ukraine at special factories. The revival of national traditions of shoemaking began only in the post-war period. For example, in the 1960s, masters worked in Lviv who in their work restored the forms of ancient Ukrainian pottery, thus starting a folklore trend in modern glassmaking.
Although shoemaking has lost its former popularity and industrial scale due to technological changes, its legacy lives on in the history and culture of the regions. Some museums and exhibition complexes store unique exhibits and information about shoemaking traditions in Ukraine.
