Description:
St. George the Victorious in the hagiographic code of Andrei Kurbsky
2004, 288 enlarged format
The book continues the study and publication of translations from the hagiographic code of Prince A. M. Kurbsky, created in his circle in the Kovel estate in Volhynia around 1579 For the first time published a little-known valuable source - a series of works dedicated to the Great Martyr George the Victorious (†303), one of the most revered saints in Russia, a warrior-horseman, a snake fighter, a national and state patron. The cycle includes two "torments" of St. George and the encomium ("Praise") of the Byzantine hagiographer Simeon Metaphrastus (X century). The translations have been preserved in a unique list of the hagiographic code of the late 70s – early 80s of the XVI century, made in Kurbsky's scriptorium. The St. George cycle is published according to the rules of linguistic publication of ancient Russian written sources. When transmitting the text, all the linguistic features of the manuscript are preserved. In parallel with the Old Russian translations, their Latin originals are given from the famous "hagiographic library" of Lavrenty Suriya De probatis sanctorum historiis (Cologne, 1571. T. 2). The book also includes research, textual, paleographic, linguistic comments, photographic reproduction of the Old Russian list. The publication is designed for specialists and lovers of domestic antiquities.
