Description:
The Holy Hedwig Cathedral (German: Sankt-Hedwigs-Kathedrale) is a Catholic cathedral on Bebelplatz in Berlin. The seat of the Archbishop of Berlin, Cardinal Heiner Koch.
The interior of the cathedral
The cathedral was the first Catholic Church in Prussia after the Protestant Reformation, built in the XVIII century with the permission of King Frederick II the Great.
Frederick's intention was to offer the numerous Catholic immigrants who arrived in Berlin, especially from Upper Silesia, a place of worship. Therefore, the church was dedicated to the patron saint of Silesia and Brandenburg, St. Hedwig of Silesia. The building was designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff on the model of the Pantheon in Rome, and construction began in 1747, being soon interrupted and delayed several times due to economy. It was not opened until November 1, 1773, when the king's friend, Ignacy Krasicki, as Bishop of Warmia (later Archbishop of Gniezno), presided over the opening of the cathedral.
After the Kristallnacht pogroms that took place on the night of November 9-10, 1938, Bernhard Lichtenberg, canon of St. Hedwig's Cathedral since 1931, publicly prayed for the Jews in evening prayer. Lichtenberg was subsequently arrested by the Nazis and died on the way to the Dachau concentration camp. In 1965, Lichtenberg's remains were transferred to the crypt in St. Hedwig's Cathedral.
The cathedral burned down completely in 1943 during air raids on Berlin and was under reconstruction from 1952 to 1963.
