Mark Evstafyevich Ozerny (1890-1957) was a Stakhanovite collective farmer who set a world record for corn yield in 1949 - 223.8 kg / ha. Hero of Socialist Labor (1947).
He was born on May 22 (June 3), 1890 in the village of Mishurin Rog (now Verkhnedneprovsky district, Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). He spent his whole life there.
Experiments to increase yields have been carried out in the Dnipropetrovsk region since 1925 in the laboratory for breeding corn under the leadership of B. P. Sokolov. The first hybrids, "Firstborn" and "Success", Boris Sokolov created in 1932. By the mid-thirties, the technology was introduced in some farms, one of which was the collective farm "Chervony Partizan" ("Red Partisan"), which Mark Evstafyevich Ozerny joined in 1933.
The Ozerny unit learned to obtain high yields of corn grain on the cob: 108.3 c/ha in 1937, 120 c/ha in 1939 and 1940. With the help of intervarietal hybridization, Ozerny bred the Partizanka corn variety (the name is given in honor of his native collective farm) and achieved a further increase in yield: 136 c/ha in 1946 (dry) year, 150 c/ha in 1947, and, finally, 223.8 c/ha (on an area of 2 hectares) and 175 c/ha (on an area of 8 hectares) in 1949. The latter indicator in all sources of that time was recognized as a world record of yield.
The record glorified the collective farmer throughout the country, the former link became a famous person. In the future, M. E. Ozerny was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR of 2-4 convocations. Member of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) since 1940.
He died on December 27, 1957. He was buried in his native village.
