He was born in the town of Okhrimovo, Lipovetsky district, Kiev province (now Sarny, Monastyrishchensky district, Cherkasy region of Ukraine), in a wealthy Jewish family. In 1909-1912 he was a member of the Kiev Group of Jewish Writers.
In 1921, Bergelson went to Berlin, lived and worked there, as well as in Lithuania, Romania, France, collaborating with Jewish publishers, until 1929, after which he returned to the USSR. He was considered the greatest prose writer-socialist realist writing in Yiddish.
Member of the Presidium of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. He lived in the "House of Writers" in Lavrushinsky Lane.
David Bergelson was arrested in 1949 and executed by firing squad in 1952 in connection with the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. In 1955 he was posthumously rehabilitated.
