Since 1928, Adolf Hitler rented a chalet (village house) Haus Wachenfeld in the resort town of Obersalzberg, near Berchtesgaden. In 1933, he bought it from its previous owners, rebuilt it and renamed it Berghof. Houses were built near Berghof for some high-ranking Nazis (including Göring and Bormann) and the "Eagle's Nest" (Kehlsteinhaus), Hitler's tea house, built under the leadership of Martin Bormann on top of the Kelstein mountain in 1938 as a gift for the 50th anniversary of the Führer. (Kelsteinhaus is still used as a restaurant today.) In Berchtesgaden itself there are separate structures of the Reich Chancellery.
