"Emigrants" is a novel by Tolstoy, based on real events. It was written in 1931, published in the magazine "New World" with the title "Black Gold", under which it was published in separate editions of 1932 and 1933, and as part of the collected works in 1935. The author intended to include this text in the cycle "Walking through the torments" as the fourth part. After the fierce criticism of the RAPP, which accused the writer of an unsuccessful synthesis of the adventurous and political genre, in 1939 Alexei Tolstoy radically rewrote the novel, changing its title. The author himself defined the genre of his text as a story.
