The Thracian city of Sevtopolis was discovered during rescue excavations that the Archaeological Institute and Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences organized in connection with the construction of the "Geordi Dimitrov" dam near the village of Koprinka, near the town of Kazanlak. The excavations were carried out from 1948 to 1954 under the main leadership of Academician Dimitar P. Dimitrov with the participation of a large team of young scientists, employees of the AIM and archaeologists from the museums of Kazanlak and Staraya Zagora.
