"Scream" (Norw. Skrik is a series of paintings created between 1893 and 1910 by the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch. They depict a human figure screaming in despair, against a blood-red sky and an extremely generalized landscape background. In 1895 Munch created a lithograph of the same subject.
"The Scream" as an emblem of expressionism serves as a kind of prelude to the art of the twentieth century, foreshadowing the key themes of loneliness, despair and alienation for modernism. As if looking into the future century of world wars, revolutions, and environmental disasters, the author seems to deny the very possibility of any transcendence or transcendence to them.
