He received his initial artistic training in the studio of fine arts (head Symonenko A.M.) of the Nikolaev House of Pioneers and Schoolchildren. In 1972 he graduated from the Odessa State Pedagogical Institute named after K.D. Ushinsky, Faculty of Art and Graphics.

Participant of republican and all-Union competitions and exhibitions since the age of 14. He has four solo exhibitions. The works of M.D. Shtompel are in the collections of individuals and collectors in Ukraine and Germany.
Dozens of his students became winners of regional and All-Ukrainian competitions, festivals, graduated and are now studying in secondary and higher art schools.
