Description:
Sheremetyevskaya Natalia. A walk in the rhythms of Step. Photographs. Moscow, Pechatnoye delo, 1996, 240 pp. Paperback, Regular format. The first book in our country about tap dancing. The author tells about the history of tap, starting from its emergence in America in the middle of the XIX century, and about its difficult fate in our country. The Russian public got acquainted with this dance as early as 1908, when Negro musicians and dancers toured St. Petersburg. After their grandiose success (they were even invited to perform in the Winter Palace), our pop dancers quickly mastered step (in Russian dance there is a similar element - 'shotguns'). At the same time, the onomatopoeic term 'tap dance' appeared. At the end of the First World War, tap dancers G. Orlik and O. Karavaev toured the United States. Since then, some movements of Russian dances have entered the arsenal of "step dancers" and there is a mutual influence between American and Russian dancers. The author Natalia Evgenievna Sheremetyevskaya devoted her life to the art of dance, first as a ballet dancer at the Leningrad Maly Opera and Ballet Theater and the Folk Dance Ensemble under the direction of Igor Moiseev. And then she chose the path of a historian of choreography and ballet critic. She is the author of several books, including the bibliographic rarity "Dance on the Stage", and numerous articles.
