The well-known disdain with which even many professional musicians treat the guitar is based on a misunderstanding of its artistic merits, ignorance of the history of the instrument and its literature. The lack of strength of the guitar allowed her to become a regular member of the symphony orchestra. It was widely used mainly in amateur music-making, where it successfully performed the functions of an accompanying and solo instrument, second only to the piano, this "orchestra in miniature". However, like the piano and some other musical instruments, the guitar was also used as a concert instrument of a peculiar sound, for which special literature was created and there were virtuoso performers who attracted the attention of music lovers in the West and in Russia. To this end, in addition to chapters telling in chronological order about the past and present of the guitar, and brief monographic essays dedicated to outstanding Russian guitarists, the work includes two introductory chapters. The first tells about the origin of the instrument and its existence, the second considers the guitar as an accompanying instrument, which at a certain historical stage played an important role in strengthening the democratic foundations of Russian vocal art.

С этой целью, помимо глав, повествующих в порядке хронологической последовательности о прошлом и настоящем гитары, и кратких монографических очерков, посвященных выдающимся русским гитаристам, в работу включены две вводных главы. В первой рассказывается о происхождении инструмента и его бытовании, вторая рассматривает гитару как аккомпанирующий инструмент, на определенном историческом этапе сыгравший немаловажную роль в укреплении демократических основ русского вокального искусства.
