Soviet Ukrainian painter, graphic artist and teacher. Member of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR. Leonid Ivanovich Chernov was born on June 18, 1915 in Starobilsk, Kharkiv province (now Luhansk region). Already as a child, he showed an irrepressible craving for drawing. The future artist copied drawings from books, magazines, and constantly designed school newspapers. His school drawing teacher was Fyodor Grigorievich Osipov, a student of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, a student of V. Serov and K. Savitsky. He noticed the makings of artistic talent in his student and paid special attention to Leonid. From 1934 to 1937, Chernov studied at the Kharkiv Art School. From 1938 he studied at the Kharkiv Art Institute. Teachers - N. Samokish, A. Kokel. During the Second World War, the Kharkiv Art Institute was evacuated to Samarkand. There, in 1942, L.I. Chernov defended his Ph.D. thesis "Delivery of weapons to partisans". In 1943 he became a member of the Kharkiv organization of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1944 to 1947, Leonid Ivanovich Chernov served as director of the Kharkiv Art School. Participant of republican, all-Union and foreign art exhibitions since 1945. From 1947 he taught at the Kharkiv Art Institute, from 1961 - Associate Professor, from 1977 - Professor. For many years he headed the painting section of the Kharkiv organization of the Union of Artists of Ukraine. He worked in the field of easel painting and graphics. An unsurpassed master of portraits, landscapes, still lifes.
L. I. Chernov created several thematic cycles, in particular, "Kharkov", which included the landscapes "Morning of the native city", "Kharkov in the evening", "New Kharkov". In general, the paintings of this cycle give an almost complete portrait of the renovated big city. Separate cycles combine paintings that appeared as a result of a trip to India, trips to Cuba and Bulgaria.
His main works are paintings – "Mother" (1948, DXM), "Dreams" (1964, XXM), graphic – a series of color lithographs "Pryazovia" (1955), a series of color etchings and watercolors "Throughout India" (1957), a series of drawings for Ukrainian folk songs (1961–1965), etc. Numerous personal exhibitions were held in Kharkiv, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Odessa, Sumy, Starobilsk.
