The book of the Czech academician Frantisek Behounek, called by him 'Tragedy in the Polar Sea (Airship at the North Pole)' is a true and deeply exciting story of a direct participant in the polar expedition Nobile. The book tells about the death of the airship Italia, about the hardships endured on the ice floe by the surviving participants of the flight, and, finally, about their rescue. The author writes with great sympathy about the rescue expeditions on the icebreakers "Krasin" and "Malygin", about the heroic, selfless struggle against the harsh elements of Soviet sailors, pilots, polar explorers, who came to the aid of the victims of the disaster and showed the world a vivid example of true Soviet humanism. At the same time, he criticized the inaction of the Italian fascist government, which essentially doomed the people who ended up on the ice floe to death. The author's extensive factual material allows us to assess the importance of the rescue expedition of 1928 on the icebreaker "Krasin" for the further study and development of the Arctic by the Soviet Union, which achieved tremendous success in this area. This is undoubtedly the best published work dedicated to an event that once shook the world. Written in a simple and at the same time figurative language, the book makes you feel the breath of the icy desert, evokes contempt for the faint-hearted and admiration for the courage of the heroes of the Arctic.

Приводимый автором большой фактический материал позволяет оценить важное значение спасательной экспедиции 1928 г. на ледоколе `Красин` для дальнейшего изучения и освоения Арктики Советским Союзом, достигнувшим огромнейших успехов в этой области. Это, бесспорно, лучшее из опубликованных произведений, посвященных событию, которое в свое время потрясло мир. Написанная простым и вместе с тем образным языком, книга дает живо почувствовать дыхание ледяной пустыни, вызывает презрение к малодушным и восхищение мужеством героев Арктики.
