In 1911, he published his first work "Iron Bridges. Processing, Assembly and Installation" (St. Petersburg: K. L. Rikker Publishing House, 1911. — 405 p.: ill.), which was subsequently reprinted five times. Later, the results of his research were published: "Pressure of loose bodies and calculation of retaining walls", "Theory of loose bodies" and "Statics of loose solids".
At the beginning of 1918, Prokofiev was summoned to the People's Commissariat of Communications, where he agreed to work in the commission for the restoration of bridges blown up during the Civil War. Prokofiev became a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Commissariat of Railways (NKPS) and its Bridge Commission[6]. He traveled on their assignments for consultations in the places of restoration of vital railway bridges across the Volga, Donets, Kama, Belaya.
In 1925, Prokofiev developed a project of a metal bridge for two railway tracks across the Northern Donets with a span of 108 m, and in 1927 - a standard span for bridges with a length of 158 m.
In 1920, he was invited to the All-Russian Military Aviation Academy named after Prof. N. E. Zhukovsky, where he taught the course "Strength of Materials" and was the first in the world to form a specialized discipline "Structural Mechanics of an Airplane"[7].

Выезжал по их заданиям для консультаций в местах восстановления жизненно важных железнодорожных мостов через Волгу, Донец, Каму, Белую. В 1925 году Прокофьевым был разработан проект металлического моста для двух железнодорожных путей через Северный Донец пролётом 108 м, а в 1927 году — типовое пролётное строение для мостов длиной 158 м. Эти работы стали его последними авторскими проектами, поскольку в 1930 году было создано специальное Управление по проектированию при НКПС (Мостранспроект) и практика индивидуальных заказов проектов специалистам прекратилась. В 1920 году он был приглашен в ВВИА им. проф. Н. Е. Жуковского, в котором он читал учебный курс «Сопротивление материалов» и впервые в мире сформировал специализированную дисциплину «Строительная механика аэроплана»[7].
