The book is a textbook of theoretical mechanics for physics students and contains a minimum of information from mechanics, which is necessary for further study of theoretical physics. The book is based on a course of lectures given by the author (a well-known theoretical physicist) at the University of Oxford. The book was published abroad three times (almost unchanged) - in 1961, 1964 and 1971. Professor Dirk Ter Haar (19 April 1919 – Drachten, 3 September 2002) was an Anglo-Dutch physicist. He studied physics at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and the University of Oxford in England, and completed postgraduate studies at Leiden University. In 1946 he was the Niels Bohr Research Fellow at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen (now the Niels Bohr Institute) and received his doctorate in Leiden in 1948 for his dissertation on the origin of the solar system. From 1947 to 1950, he was a visiting associate professor of physics at Purdue University. In 1950 he became a professor of physics at the University of St. Andrews, and then became a British citizen. In 1952 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1966, Ter Haar became a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Many prominent scientists have studied under Ter Haar, including Anthony Leggett, winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics, and Deng Jiaxian, one of China's leading scientists and founders of China's nuclear weapons programs. Dirk could read Russian and played a prominent role in disseminating the work of Soviet physicists such as Landau and Kapitsa to the Western world.
