This work conveys the tragic irony of war, where an attempt to save property can result in its loss. The first title of the picture was "Reality Burned Out". The painting depicts my relative's burnt car near garages in Mariupol. All the days of the occupation, we hid together in the basement from shelling, and his car stood on the other side of the road among the rubble. In an effort to save the car, he moved it to a seemingly safer location. But the very next day, the rocket hit a nearby garage, and the car instantly burned down.
Overcast winter skies, brick garage walls and a mutilated car in the foreground create an atmosphere of hopelessness and unpredictability of war, where every decision can be fatal. The picture reminds of the fragility of human plans and the illusion of control over the situation in the conditions of hostilities.
