Его автор - крупнейший этимолог-славист - дает сводку преимущественно зарубежных этимологических исследований русской лексики по состоянию на 1960 г. Перевод словаря был осуществлен в 1964-1973 гг. Материал, не учтенный автором, по мере возможности был включен в словарь в виде дополнений, сделанных переводчиком членом-корреспондентом РАН О.Н.Трубачевым. В 4-е издание словаря вошла его статья «Из работы над русским Фасмером», он же является автором Послесловия.
