Description:
Leont'ev V. V., Novikova K. A. Toponymic Dictionary of the North-East of the USSR. Magadan: Book Publishing House, 1989, 456 p. + warehouse. map. Hardcover, standard format.
The toponymic dictionary of the North-East of the USSR covers the territories of the Magadan, Kamchatka regions, and partly the Yakut ASSR (the upper reaches of the Indigirka, the left bank of the lower reaches of the Kolyma). The dictionary includes toponyms of all northern nationalities and peoples who lived and live in this region: Eskimo, Chukchi, Koryak, Kerek, Itelmen, Even, Yukaghir (Chuvan), Yakut, Russian and English-speaking. The main part of local toponyms in the Eskimo, Chukchi, Koryak, Even, Itelmen, Yukaghir, and Yakut languages has undergone a strong morphological, semantic, and phonetic adaptation and has changed so phonetically that even speakers of these languages are unable to give their correct pronunciation and understand their meaning. In this regard, one of the first tasks was the reconstruction of the adapted toponym by means of modern northern languages, the subsequent etymologization of the geographical name and the analysis of its morphological components.
