Its author, a prominent etymologist and Slavist, gives a summary of mainly foreign etymological studies of Russian vocabulary as of 1960. The material not taken into account by the author, as far as possible, was included in the dictionary in the form of additions made by the translator, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences O. N. Trubachev.
