Тасос, расположенный на одноименном острове, обладал важными металлическими рудниками, которые привлекали внимание соседей. Во время Персидских войн (490-480 гг. до н.э.) он был оккупирован персами, а в 463 г. до н.э. он был завоеван Кимоном и попал под контроль Афин, после чего последовал их судьбе. Город восстановил свою независимость только в 411 г. до н.э.
