Nadiia (1926-2005) and Valerii (1924-1997) Protoryevy were a famous couple of ceramic artists, one of the most prominent masters of the Vasylkiv Majolica Factory. They worked at the factory from 1950 to the 1980s. Prior to that, they studied at the Kyiv School of Decorative and Applied Arts, where they were taught by, among others, Dmytro Holovko, Oleksandra Hriadunova, and Pelageia Hlushchenko.

The creative heritage of the Protoryev family occupies a significant place in the history of Ukrainian interior ceramics. They have been actively working in the field of decorative sculpture since the 1960s, focusing exclusively on images of the animal world. The heroes of Protyoriev's sculptures are rams, horses, deer and mountain goats, steppe birds and exotic lions. The attraction to fantastic motifs and deep red, brown and dark green colors form their unique artistic style.
According to the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art, it was Valerii Protoriev who created the already legendary Vasylkiv maiolica rooster. The sculpture has become a symbol of Ukrainian resilience and has attracted worldwide attention to Vasylkiv majolica.

Collectors appreciate this kind and rare animal because of its respectable size and small edition. It looks especially impressive when paired with a small lion from the same series.
