A rare copy of The Legend of Zelda was sold at auction for $288,000

A rare copy of The Legend of Zelda was sold at auction for $288,000
This story began less than a month ago, when a 22-year-old Californian named Kiro discovered a packaged NES cartridge containing the classic game The Legend of Zelda, released back in 1986.

At one time, the game could be purchased for a modest $29 in stores, which today, adjusted for inflation, is equivalent to approximately $80. But, as it turned out, the find could have been worth much more. After trying to sell the game on eBay, Kiro began receiving offers for $30,000, which made him question the real value of his item.
Later, a collector contacted the 22-year-old Californian and said that his cartridge belonged to the first batch of The Legend of Zelda games released. In 2021, a similar copy was sold for an incredible $870,000. After this conversation, the guy realized that he could get much more than he initially thought. And he decided to use the services of Heritage Auctions with a starting bid of $70,000.

The auction ended on February 23. The final bid was $288,000. Kiro, answering questions about his plans, said that he plans to use the money received for long-term investments. So the guy wants to ensure the financial well-being of his family.
It is worth recalling that The Legend of Zelda from Nintendo is a series of video games created by the famous game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. The action takes place in a fantasy world. And the gameplay itself involves a mixture of different directions - arcades, quests, puzzles, etc.

Games in this series have sold a total of over 70 million copies.
