Mykhajlo Serhiyovych Hrushevsky (1866-1934) was a prominent Ukrainian historian, public figure, and head of the Central Rada of the Ukrainian People's Republic. Undoubtedly, he is one of the most famous figures of twentieth-century Ukraine.

The first edition of the first volume was published in Lviv in 1898. The second, expanded edition of this work was also published during the author's lifetime, with the exception of volume 10, published in 1936.
