Rare whiskey went under the hammer at Sotheby's auction for almost $120,000

A bottle of The Dalmore Luminary No.2 The Rare 49-year-old single malt whiskey was sold at Sotheby's auction for £93,750, almost $120,000. Proceeds from the sale will go to help a local Scottish museum.

The lot sold is one of three bottles created by the whiskey company and the V&A Dundee design museum in Scotland.

The drink bottle is an elegant glass sculpture by the British architecture and design firm Zaha Hadid Architects. It was created by hand, polished for 500 hours, and weighs about 80 kg.

As for the drink, its authorship belongs to Gregg Glassom and Richard Patterson, masters of The Dalmore. It was aged in bourbon and rare sherry casks, a hybrid oak cask.

One complete set was auctioned off, the second was left at the distillery museum, and the third bottle will be sold as part of the Luminary whiskey collection.

"This is an absolutely deserved result for a true collector's item that combines the brilliant effect of an aged liquid, high conceptual design and a worthy purpose," said Sotheby's Global Head of Spirits Johnny Fowle.
