Black-and-white photos of Lviv from 1957, preserved in the digital collection of Yuriy Vdovenko, reveal a completely different image of this city.
The first thing that attracts attention is the incredible amount of greenery that dominates the urban landscape. Not just trees, but real flower beds and flower arrangements create the atmosphere of luxurious green massifs that stretch along the streets and squares.

Comparing the past with the present, one cannot help but feel sadness at the lack of greenery in the modern city. Instead of greenery, concrete and glass now dominate. The trees of the 1950s could save the city from overheating and create pleasant conditions for residents.
The photos also reflect the traditions of the European city, its past. Even the symbols of the Soviet era find their place in the urban landscape of Lviv.

The appearance of the townspeople attracts special attention. Photographs from 1957 show a restrained elegance and harmony in clothes. Military uniforms are still common on the streets.
There is little transport, even public transport, people move mainly on foot. Infrequent cars are greeted with admiring, envious or frightened looks.

Archival photos of Yuriy Vdovenko open up a historical perspective, evoke a desire to preserve the natural environment and cultural heritage of the city. They remind us of the importance of preserving green areas and the harmonious development of urban space.
