"Approach to Venice" or "Venice from the Lagoon" - a watercolour painting sent to the digital valuation service by the Christie's auction house turned out to be the work of the British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner.
The watercolour, the authorship of which was attributed to the English artist John Ruskin, turned out to be the work of Turner, created in 1840. The artist created it during his last visit to Venice.
After the examination, it was established that the British artist used the type of paper that he always used for most other Venetian landscapes. This was additionally confirmed by strong brushstrokes, restrained lines and palette.
Later, Turner specialist Ian Warrell confirmed the authorship and prepared information for the Christie's catalogue.
The painting had been owned by the family of the English engineer and collector Geddon Adams since the 1930s. Initially identified as a Turner, the painting was later identified as a Ruskin. Christie's experts are now confident that the initial attribution was correct.
The watercolour has been valued at $300,000–$500,000 and will soon be auctioned in New York.
