Bohdan Petrychuk, a collector of vyshyvankas, is a guest on Listen to Violity
Vyshyvanka Day, celebrated every year on the third Thursday of May, is an important holiday. It is a day when Ukrainians wear national costumes to honor traditions and feel connected to the past. Today, the “Listen to Violity” podcast is joined by a person who feels it every day. This is the owner of one of the most famous and largest collections of embroidered shirts, a collector from Ivano-Frankivsk region, Bohdan Petrychuk
His collection includes hundreds of ancient shirts, and not only them. His huge ethnographic collection, which he began to form as a teenager, includes more than 2000 items. These are components of traditional Ukrainian costumes (keptsi, sardaks, stocks, headdresses, shawls) and other antiques such as chests, ceramics, candlesticks, icons, jewelry, and photographs. Hutsul antiquities are Bohdan's passion and his life's work.

The collector restores all the clothes himself. He willingly shares the knowledge he has gained over the years of collecting, and his home in the Hutsul village of Babyn is visited as a museum. He has been interviewed by the Ivan Honchar Museum and NV, and written about in Ukrainian Vogue, Local History, and Violity Magazine
In this episode of Listen to Violity, podcast host Denys Minin asked Bohdan about restoration, the oldest items in the collection, and his cherished collector's dreams. The guest told us what he thinks about the name “vyshyvanka” and shared his own attitude to the sacralization of embroidered clothing.

What is the difference between the approaches of different shirt collectors and what should you understand when you are just starting a collection? How to find the “right” piece and where to buy items to get additional value? Bohdan shares incredible stories of former owners of shirts from his collection and recalls meeting some of them.
Can one find change a life? What does it feel like to restore an item for several years and is it worth rushing to restore it at all? Our guest answers all of Denys's questions and finally gives valuable advice on how to choose an embroidered shirt for yourself.
The premiere of the new episode of Listen to Violity took place on May 15 at 19:00. Enjoy your viewing!
