A 2,000-year-old hoard of Roman coins may have been hidden by a soldier during the civil war
Archaeologists have discovered a hoard of 175 silver coins hidden in a clay pot in a forest in northeast Tuscany, Italy. The coins date mainly from the 1st century BC and are a valuable artifact of the turbulent times of Roman history, which belonged to the active phase of the war for the throne.
According to historian Federico Santangelo, professor at Newcastle University in the UK, the treasure could be hidden not only by soldiers, but also by a businessman who wanted to save his money during turbulent times. However, the chronology of archaeological finds shows that many treasures were hidden during wars and upheavals. “The time of crisis forced people to hide their money, and for some reason, they could not return for them, ” - the historian noted.
The coins date back to 82 BC, when the Roman general Lucius Cornelius Sulla fought for power among the leaders of the Roman Republic. Sulla won the war and became dictator of the Roman state.
The treasure was discovered in 2021, but made public only after
how the place was fully explored. Lorella Alderighi, an archaeologist at the provincial archeology office, said the find was found in a forest near the city of Livorno.
The coins were hidden in the forest belt, which has survived to this day. The remains of a Roman farm have been found nearby. According to Alderiga's version, the owner of the treasure may have was a Roman soldier who got into trouble during conflicts.
