Bolinao skull: Philippine archaeologists reveal secrets of mysterious find with gold teeth
Archeology is designed to reveal the secrets of the past, giving us a glimpse into ancient civilizations and the lives of our ancestors. During the recent excavations, an amazing discovery was made - the skull of Bolinao. This remarkable find has shaken up the archaeological community, offering new insights into the history of the region and shedding light on the mysterious human remains found there.

The Bolinao skull was discovered during an excavation led by a team of archaeologists from the National Museum of the Philippines in the picturesque coastal town of Bolinao in the Philippines. The skull was discovered in an ancient burial ground, carefully buried in a mound with other artifacts and human remains.

The researchers also discovered 67 other skulls and ceramics dating to the early Ming Dynasty in China (around the 15th century AD). As for the main find, the skull of Bolinao, its age has been estimated between the 14th and 15th centuries AD.
The Bolinao skull is a major mystery for researchers. Its distinctive features and the particular context of its burial have sparked intense curiosity about its provenance. The most interesting thing is the complex ornaments that cover the jaws and are made of gold. The teeth are decorated with numerous gold elements that form a pattern similar to fish scales. The dimensions of these dental ornaments are approximately 10 mm in width and 11.5 mm in height.

Closer analysis revealed that the teeth had been drilled and the cavities filled with gold discs, plugs, pegs and wire. Probably, the owner of such a jaw had a brilliant smile, but the procedure of its creation seems very painful.

Initial analysis indicates that the skull probably belonged to an adult male, but definitive statements can only be made after a thorough examination. Using a combination of scientific methods such as radiocarbon dating, DNA analysis and facial reconstruction, researchers hope to shed light on the physical characteristics, genetic lineage and potential cultural affiliation of the person to whom the skull belonged.
In addition, a detailed study of the skull can provide valuable information about health, diet and potential causes of death. By studying the bone's microstructure and performing isotopic analysis, scientists can gain insights into a person's lifestyle, environment, and even potential migration patterns.

The practice of decorating teeth is not uncommon in this part of the world. By the time Christians came to these lands, the use of gold to decorate jaws signaled high social status and beauty. If we turn to the chronicles of early explorers, for example, Antonio Pigafetta, the chronicler of Magellan's expedition in 1521, he was surprised by the large amount of gold ornaments worn by the natives. One of the leaders had three golden "marks" on each tooth. And when he smiled or spoke, his teeth glittered as if they were covered with gold.
By preserving and studying artifacts like these, humanity can bridge the gap between civilizations, fostering a deeper appreciation of human history.
