The painter was born in post-war Kyiv in the family of the famous artist and teacher Leonyd Chichkan. He received his education at the Kiyv State Art Institute. In 1973 he was admitted to the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR.

Chichkan is a vivid representative of the generation of "quiet protest" of the 1970s-1980s, who sought internal emigration. In his work, the artist abandoned the Soviet canons of socialist realism in favor of intimate chamber subjects. On his canvases Kyiv appears in calm soft colors in its everyday beauty.

One of the main works of the master - created in the very early 1970s "Microdistrict". Here Chichkan depicted the courtyard of a new building in the capital's Berezniaky, where his family got an apartment, focusing on the typical grid-fencing of sports grounds.

With the canvas "Sport" the artist continues his manifesto of individualism. As on the canvas "In Hydropark", here he shows us a warm summer Kyiv. The citizens are engaged in solitary sports, consciously separating themselves from the Soviet reality, where solitude, it would seem, is impossible.
