There are several versions of why the walls are painted the way they are: according to one of them, blue helps protect against mosquitoes better than other colors, according to another, the blue color symbolizes heaven, which reminds of eternal life. However, according to some residents, the city walls were painted blue in the 1970s simply to attract tourists
Some say the tradition originated as a symbol of Jewish heritage, while others believe it was invented as a way to cool off in the scorching heat. Regardless of its origin, the blue facades of Shafshavan have become a defining feature and main attraction for tourists.
However, historical facts should not be disputed. Shafshawan was founded in 1471 as a small fortress by Mulay Ali ibn Rashid el Alami. He founded the city in order to fight against Portuguese incursions into northern Morocco. After the end of the Reconquista in Spain during the Middle Ages, many Moriscos and Jews moved to Şafşawan.
In 1920, the city was occupied by Spanish troops led by General Damas Berenguer. After their exit, about 4 years later, Shafshawan immediately became part of the Republic of Rif under the leadership of Abd el Karim el Khattabi. However, in 1926, the Spanish army occupied the city again.
While the architecture and scenery are undoubtedly the main attractions of Shafshawan, the city is also the cultural center of the country. The local Berber and Rif communities are frequent visitors, making it a great place to immerse yourself in Moroccan culture.
