Icons, these mysterious works of art, attract with their spiritual meaning and historical depth. In the soul of the people of Ukraine, a country with a rich history and cultural diversity, icons occupy a special place. Let's delve into the world of Ukrainian icons, learn about their creators, and reveal their unique meaning, history and symbolism.
History and origins:

The Bible itself does not use the term "icon", but concepts and symbolism associated with icons can be found in various parts of the Old and New Testaments. Thus, in Deuteronomy (Exodus 25:18-22) two images of cherubim are mentioned that were placed on the Ark of the Covenant in the sanctuary. Cherubim, as divine beings, had wings and human faces, and also symbolized closeness to God.
Icons have many symbolic elements that carry deep spiritual and religious meanings.

The image of saints, such as Peter and Paul, can convey their life stories and exploits.

The colors used in the icons also have their own meanings: green symbolizes hope, red - love, blue - heaven. Every detail on the icon - from the facial expressions of the saint to the picturesque details around it - can tell its own unique story and transmit spiritual messages.

Theophanes the Greek, also known as Theophanes the Iconographer, was a prominent icon painter and symbolist artist who lived in Byzantium in the 14th century. Despite his origins (hence the nickname "Greek"), Theophanes became known as one of the great icon painters of Byzantium.

His style and creativity were inspired by the Byzantine tradition, but at the same time, Theophanes gave his works a unique depth and personality.

His icons were distinguished by expressive, psychologically nuanced images of saints, and the art of reproducing subtle human emotions.
