
A copy of the comic book that introduced Superman to the world in 1938 went under the hammer on Thursday, April 4, during the first session of the four-day Comics & Comic Art Signature auction organized by Heritage Auctions.

The unrestored copy is preserved in extraordinary condition. Its authenticity is certified by the specialized company Comics Guaranty (CGC) with a grade of Very Fine + 8.5. The same issue with a CGC grade of 9.0 was sold on eBay in 2014 for $3 million 208 thousand.

"Immediately following the record-breaking sale of Action Comics #1, the next lot, a similar but this time professionally restored copy with a CGC Apparent 8.0 grade, sold for $576,000, a historic high for any restored comic book," the auction house said in a press release.

The comix, which shows Superman's first flight (or at least his first jump over a tall building), is considered the beginning of the superhero genre. At the time of its release in June 1938, the comic book was sold for 10 cents, which in 2023 was equivalent to 2 US dollars.
