In the Drmno coal mine near the town of Kostolac, 50 kilometers east of Belgrade, miners discovered the remains of an ancient Roman ship that was probably used to supply the nearby town and the military headquarters on the front of the Roman Empire.

Archaeologists suggest that the ship dates back to the III-IV centuries AD. They believe that this ancient vessel carried provisions along small rivers near the Roman city of Viminacium, located 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from the place of discovery.

The ancient ship was discovered in a layer of silt, at a depth of about 8 meters below the surface. To reach the coal seam, the miners first dug out the top layer of soil with a mechanical excavator, and the remains were visible on the wall of the cut.

After discovering the find, the miners turned to archaeologists from the Viminacium Archaeological Park, which is managed by the Institute of Archeology in Belgrade, for help.
